Small Laptops

small laptopsSmall Laptops were not always on the scene. There was a time in the early 1960's when computer mainframes’ occupied an entire room, powered by motor generators and requiring massive air conditioning systems in order to function. The advancement in technology over the span of 50 years resulted in smaller mainframe computers and when the Personal Computer (PC) came on the scene it was expensive and not everyone could own one. As the PC market matured the footprint of the desk top didn't change much, but the laptop computer from its early days has become smaller and smaller and the small laptops really are at the forefront of miniaturization of the PC. Laptops became smaller, faster and less expensive and available to everyone. In the past 4 years the Small Laptop Computer has evolved significantly into an extremely small form factor.

How much battery power will you require? How heavy is the system? The list goes on. When it comes to choosing a portable device everything from design quality to operating system needs to be considered, especially when you’re handing over a large sum of cash for the privilege!

Small Computers Defined

Small computers can be almost anything you want them to be if your are looking for a definition. Over the past two years we have seen Netbooks and small notebooks be described as small computers when in fact many of the laptops were traditional laptops. A small computer is a laptop under about a 10 inch screen size and on the lower end the UMPC with a screen size of about 7 inches is more in line with what most consider small computers. The Netbooks have been selling at a rapid pace and only recently sales have slowed somewhat as iPad and smartphones have been taking some of the interest away from small computers. Usually small computers are second or third computers used for travel or more casual computing uses by those who have higher powered desktops or larger laptops. Undoubtedly as time goes on the definition of what is considered a small computer will evolve downward as technology and miniaturization continue toward smallness. As a practical matter the keyword size is probably the limiting factor in terms of what can be considered a small computer. Small computers are here to stay and are a vital tool for those wanting to access the Internet on the go, and travel with something lightweight.
